Barcelona!

Ok... I've been lazy and awful and am just getting around to writing about Barcelona here at the end of my trip! As I'm doing a round of laundry, no less!

So I took the dread night bus to get here... from Paris no less... but oddly enough it wasn't that bad. My bus from Lancaster to London was worse... And I *did* get to pass through some lovely French country in the early morning... Think lots of vineyards and rolling hills! And then we were in Barcelona! I can now say I've been through Basque country... tho I wouldn't know it from anywhere else...

The Airbnb is a lovely place with just small drawbacks. The couple here is clearly using this as an income source... so there are nice touches everywhere. But at the same time some things are missing that could be obvious. A soap dish... a shower door to keep out all the water... that kind of thing. (Once again I'm impressed by the guy who renovated my house... I have the same kind of half wall shower... but the water stays *in* the shower very well. Here half ends up on the bathroom floor and even bedroom floor. Also I have a rain shower... Omg signs of shower home sickness?)

And of course they were waiting for my call and I didn't know I was supposed to call... so that was fun for about a half hour! All in all, tho, the place has been great! Nice bed and pretty private. And I've really only used it to fall down in at the end of the night until this evening's laundry chore...

And omg you should see the architecture here!!

Ok... so what have I actually been doing here... other than just enjoying the pleasant weather... (rained in Paris the *whole* time AND it looks like it's going to be raining in the British Isles too... SIGH!) So I *really* enjoyed this weather... oh so much! Or mucho mucho!!

Still... I did do stuff. Day 1: Picasso Museum, a veggie restaurant called Catbar (it's fun with felines here - especially as Cat is a fun pun on Catalunya and such), and in the evening a late showing of FF7 en Español! That was a blast btw! I understood a good chunk of it... and it was almost more car porn than the first time watching bc it was a more visual experience...

Fun lines: Él no juege por tus reglas... No tengo amigos. Tengo familia... La calle siempre ganá...

Day 2... I decided this day I would *walk* oh heaven help me! This was my Gaudí day. I saw Park Güell and Sagrada Familia and several other apartments he'd designed... tho I didn't go into these others... and a fountain at the Park Ciutadella... Oh my how I love Gaudí! His stuff is all so happy and full of fun! You'll see in the pics...

I also found a fun (actually a fabulous) English language used book store that I returned to on day 3... and I had tapas, tapas, and more tapas... even tried some vermouth as it turns out that's the Catalan specialty. Who knew?

My evening was spent with a coffee and chocolate croissant at a café right on the playa in Barcolenta... Swoon!!

Day 3: so I don't know if you got a sense of how much walking I did yesterday... A LOT... feet falling off blisters occurring and popping kind of walking (you're welcome for that).

So today I wanted to chill a bit while still seeing stuff...my last day here and all... AND I had to do the flipping laundry with flipping European washing machines and dryers that take 9 hours to do one load. So I had to keep running up to the flat to check on it... I had a bit of a leash today...

But that wasn't bad either. I wandered the market on Las Ramblas... The crazy High Street shops at Plaza Catalunya... A few more Gaudí buildings... the beach and the beach again... and just wandering around the teensy alleys in the Barrio Gotic where I'm staying. Wicked!!! And I ate... and ate... and ate... More tapas, goat cheese, veggie paella, and a bit more vermouth. And one more espresso and chocolate croissant...

And that leads us to now...mas o menos...

And the never ending laundry...

And then the packing... so now you're *really* jealous of me! Just wait till tomorrow... I'll get to report on wrong side driving!

Paris pt 2 and Disney!

So day 2 of Paris was my day to see a museum: I chose Musee D ' Orsay over the Louvre for this visit. C: Unfortunately it's a holiday weekend here so the rest of the world was also visiting the museum on a rainy day. There was an hour wait and then the place was crazy crowded... but at least I *love* these artists and works. So it was still lovely! A few cat pics of course!

Then I met up with Rachel and Chris and hit up a French market... so atmospheric of course! Next Shakespeare and Co Bookstore where Chris bonded with the resident cat. (Perhaps the best thing about Paris is how much they libe their cats!) We then wandered back up for dinner and drinks and just hanging out. But we tried to make an early night of it in prep for Disney the next day!

So yesterday...all day really...was Disney magic! In the rain... ;) The rain in the morning was a downer for sure... BUT it seriously cleared out the park! Rach and I never were longer than 20 minutes in any line! Takeaways were that Haunted Mansion has this whole wild west ghost element towards the end... Pirates was lovely... Possibly even more so than in CA and it was really long... maybe longer than in CA. And it was fun to go on rides like Star Tours and Small World that haven't been renovated yet. Kind of nostalgic!

The other park... Disney Studios... wasn't as great. There was a new section about Ratatouille that we were excited about... but so was the rest of the world. The ride was a 2 hr wait... the restaurant was sold out for the day... and it was so busy... and of course this corresponded with us being starving... so we started to get grumpy then. Couldn't have the fun restaurant we wanted we ended up at a whatever cafeteria and at least found somewhere to sit and eat and relax a bit.

Then we did a couple of rides and shows and such... but we really weren't feeling Disney Studios... and probably a multi pass isn't necessary in my opinion.

We were still trying to kill time until the Nighttime show at 10:30... so we did Disney village just in time for a happy hour and had some cheap wine... then saw a Disney version of busking... basically Cirque du Soleil for free! Then grabbed a Starbucks Coffee mostly for the wifi. And back to the original park.

We'd done it all once already... and we'd successfully gotten it to after 8pm... so we were pretty chill on return. Did Star Tours again, did Buzz Lightyear for the first time, and then Haunted Mansion again before grabbing a *quick* snack and getting our spot right before the show...

It was really amazing what they could project against the castle. (Poss my fave of the Disney castles,  btw.) It won some Paris award for best entertainment for over a million euros... 20 minutes of spectacular...

And then a long and weary but not bad hour home... and Sleep!!!

Today I'll slowly see a few more things... but no pressure... before heading to Barcelona!

Our Disney rides and such:
Haunted Mansion
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril
(where we accidentally ride a mondo roller coaster and almost die! )
Pirates
Star Tours
Sleeping Beauty Castle
Taniere du Dragon (dragon in a cave)
Small World
Fairy tale cruise
(Storybook Island in French... a team fave!)
Peter Pan
And we saw a Goofy garden party show twice during all this!

Ate in Studio 1
Armageddon special effects (weren't fans)
Tower of Terror (Rach waited for me as I went on quickly)
Cinemagique

Disney village: happy hour in a castle
Acrobatic show... with hula hoops
Starbucks!

Star Tours I I
Buzz Lightyear
Haunted Mansion I I
Disney Dreams Spectacular (or whatever that's called)

The *long* but happy ride home!

Paris day 1

Ok... this was a fun day!

Tho really you're going to see that it shouldn't have been... C:

First my confession: I took the night bus in from London (and am taking one to Barcelona) instead of flying or taking Eurostar. I was so cheap! And I really really am working on that! But I *was* able to sleep a bit on the bus... so that is a totally good thing. And my first day in Paris wasn't completely ruined by being too knackered to do anything. (Let's keep our fingers crossed for Barcelona as well!)

I roll into the city around 8am... and have to get into town. I was meeting the Airbnb guy at 10 am right downtown at Gare du Nord. For a brief exciting moment I thought I'd detour past Pere Lachaise and pay respects to Jim Morrison. But I came to my senses and realized that I would probably get a little lost and would have to plan in extra time... So I decided to be safe. I *did* do PL last visit, at least.

So then of course I was at our meeting place too early! But I did come with a book, of course, so it was fine. And of course I had a croissant for breakfast! And coffee... tiny lovely little coffees! (Just wait, there was a lot of coffee.)

Met the guy to exchange keys and such and he took me out to breakfast at this very cute little bar where of course he knew the owner and introduced me around... I didn't have any more pastry... but I *did* have another coffee!

Then we took a Renault cab (to me this is a significant detail) to the apartment... Right around the corner from the Sacre Coeur. Right next door to the Museum of Monmartre... It's a bananas location!!

Rach and Chris couldn't meet right away so I wandered down to a coffee shop I'd read about called Craft. I have a list from an article about the 25 best coffee shops in the world... of which I'm seeing 6 on this trip, I believe it is... They discuss Hong Kong and Korea and Copenhagen and lots of places I'm not going as well. But I figured I might as well see what's so important there... And it was a great coffee... I got a cappuccino, and then overheard a conversation with the batista and another customer about how tourists always get the cap... and I felt a little bad. If their coffee is so amazing I should probably drink their coffee!! Not a cup full of (albeit excellent) milk! The sandwich was good too!! My first Paris baguette of the trip!

Hustle back to meet up with Rach and Chris... and the weather is not our friend this day, btw, drizzly and clammy all day!

So we decided to visit the museum next door that looked interesting. And it really was! Tho it was crazy busy: holiday weekend and everyone wanting to get out of the rain... But there were all these paintings from Monmartre people who I loved... and so many used cats in their works!

And really the most important thing was that Chris was having *the day*. It was fun to watch and totally infectious! It was like a kid on a birthday or something. He basically was the tour guide of the museum... Rach helped too of course! An absolute ton! In fact she made the day BE Chris' best day...

For example, after the museum we decided to get (a tea this time) at the restaurant from Amelie. It was so great and French too! Rach spotted this local celebrity and grabbed Chris, who ran up and got to meet this person and even exchange contact information. He was practically giddy after that! So sweet!

Then we went to get an absinthe, as I'd never had any before... So of course we go to the place that had been around since the 19th century and Latrec and Picasso and Baudelaire and all these amazing people used to frequent! And of course Chris and Rachel bumped into an old friend from a previous visit and had to have a quick conversation and introduce me around... and wave at a waitress at a bar they like... they are such locals!

Spoiler alert: they are seriously thinking about making this move permanent!

And they went all out for the absinthe too! There was this art noveau fountain filled with ice and water with little spigots that the fancy cups with sugar on a slotted spoon placed on it were placed under... and the absinthe was in the glasses and the water diluted the absinthe just the right amount and the sugar mixed in with just the right swirling fashion that it was *the green fairy* of fame... And it was a really good brand that Chris had never heard of. And is now in love with... and this is when we started saying it was his day...

And also of course we started chatting as we drank (and got some bread in our tummies to be on the safe side) and got super philosophical... like *super* philosophical... and Rach pointed out that's the nature of absinthe... Why people like it so much who are poets and musicians and such... It was a lot of fun.

We then went to dinner at a fave place of theirs where they knew the owner chef and had been over to their place for dinner and such. It was a classic amazing French crepe place! And the crepes were amazing!! We even got a dessert crepe to share though we were that full! And a lovely wine... coffee (espresso this time) and a dessert wine I don't remember the name of to finish. The meal too hours. It was just right!

And we walked all over Monmartre...even in the annoying rain. It was a crazy fun day!

Woah! And I just lost a few paragraphs about my thoughts and impressions of the various shows… And that is all gone now--and it's too late tonight for me to recreate it… Boo! BUT I'll come back to it tomorrow before I drop my laptop off for the next few weeks… Till then-- See more live theater!! :)

2nd to last day--and a few more plays!

I've mentioned about a billion times that I'm seeing a play a day--just about--this last week in London. And it was NOT a lie-- After the Ronnie Scott's show--not a play, but definitely a live show of some sort so I'm counting it-- I saw American Buffalo Monday night and then Romeo and Juliet at the GLOBE Tuesday!

That doesn't seem to really leave time for much else, apparently!

Monday I DID try to have a last spin around the Soho/West End area of London… I revisited the National Gallery-- Oh how I'll miss quality museums for FREE!… I walked up and down Charing Cross Road looking in all the used book stores-- and Foyles-- one last time… I went to a veggie restaurant I liked in 7 Dials/Neal St-- very near the place where I saw John Goodman, but no such luck this time (of course, I did see him in the EVENING!)… And then one more new fun coffee shop very near the theater… Then it was time for the show.

It was GREAT! Perhaps my favorite thing I've seen in London. I'm sure I can't actually make that claim-- I've seen a lot of AMAZING stuff this semester… But this one was definitely exceptional. One way I could tell-- no one coughing through the dramatic stuff. I don't know why, but London is the most cough-ridden city in the world. During yesterday's Romeo and Juliet, for example, someone or another coughed pretty much the ENTIRE time. I am exaggerating only a little here… It's like they were a tag team or a relay of coughing. Loud, obnoxious, almost making it difficult to hear coughers. I have been wondering this whole time how the performers deal with that… Does it disturb their concentration? I mean, I guess it can't-- the show must go on and all that! And there was one embarrassing time when *I* was the cougher-- during the Ralph Fiennes Man and Superman-- this was when I had one of my three colds while I was here (before I started taking vitamins religiously). I felt terrible, and I didn't cough much-- I had brought cough drops and water and anything I could think of… But I was awfully sick and DETERMINED not to miss the show. So I try to tell myself that these other coughers mean it as little as I did then. And of course, a tourist isn't going to miss R&J at the GLOBE just because of a little cold!

OK--so back to the coughing test for American Buffalo… It's a sort-of heist movie-cum-play… (Already I make it sound fascinating, don't I?) And in these really tense silent parts where we're waiting for violence or SOMETHING, there was COMPLETE SILENCE… no coughing in the entire theater. No shifting in seats, or sneezing, or a phone going off… It was perhaps the only time that has occurred in all of my viewing of shows. Usually silence is a very relative term. Even Man and Superman didn't have that level of dead (word chosen purposely) silence. Of course, M&S was a comedy… of a sort!

By the way, I was there for the press night… so there were celebrities there, too. NOT that I saw them, but Sienna Miller is apparently dating one of the cast, and Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones) was also there… But again, I didn't see these people! I've been trolling the reviews since… as I thought the show was GREAT, and wondered therefore if the critics would hate it. That seems to be the case this semester… The Guardian gave it four stars, but the Timeout review just gave it three… though said that the cast was awesome and you won't be disappointed… Anyway, it'll make all the money--as it has such big name people in it… And I thought the dialogue was fabulous-- like something Quentin Tarantino would write…

OK--then I wandered home… and didn't pack… but DID do some late night laundry. Some people just know how to live!!

Tuesday, I started freaking out about all the stuff I have to do still… And made an effort to get some errands run before heading off to the matinee of R&J. I only made it to one, though. I got the things I ABSOLUTELY needed to have printed taken care of at CAPA… My ticket for Disney, for example (SQUEE!)… I won't have access to a printer until I'm back in Rolla from this point out-- which is kind of a long time… SO, for another example, I printed up the paper I'm going to give at my Boston Conference over Memorial Weekend. Which, clearly, meant I had to WRITE this paper-- Sheesh!! So after all that-- and the inevitable hanging out at the front desk and chatting with the staff-- who I will miss and are really lovely people-- I was WAY too late to do any other errands! I seriously had time just to run home, drop off/pick up my stuff, grab a bite of lunch, and head out to the theater for R&J… I actually thought about just not going for a second, errand-guilt-wise…

But of course I went, and of course I was glad to go. It was lovely. My only Shakespeare play of the semester (I have seen five, it turns out) where I could actually mouth the words along with the actors… This isn't entirely true-- Merchant of Venice has a couple famous monologues, of course. And there were a few lines in the Henry IVs… And of course the witches in Macbeth… OK, but you know what I mean. We all know R&J like Beatles lyrics… It's just THAT famous-- and it was definitely the most famous Shakespeare play I saw.

And of course it was a new version/set. Everyone was in old-fashioned clothes, but also tatted up like hipsters. Juliet with huge tats on her arm, leg, and chest that peeped up through her demure white dress… It was an interesting choice. And the guy who played Romeo was just so-so… But the actor who played Paris/Tybalt/servant/Mr Montague was FABULOUS!! I should look up his name. :) It was a lean cast and they all played several parts except Romeo/Juliet… And I think the better actors had more than just the one part… Like, they thought poor Romeo couldn't handle it or something. Of course, the main two are in so many more scenes they really couldn't change costumes… But still, I think I enjoyed watching how the guy who played the Prince/Mercutio/the Apothacary would change from one to another just by taking off a coat or putting on a hat or something-- and do it so effectively! Also, Romeo wasn't as cute as the Paris/Tybalt… etc guy!!! (Overheard in the audience-- He's quite fit! I love British slang! And they weren't wrong…)

So that was a great success… Even through all the coughing and pigeons flying overhead (they were actually entertaining in their deciding where/when to perch) and a helicopter that circled overhead for about 10 minutes… that was loud and distracting! Ah, live open-air theater!! Like I said, though, a total success!!

And then I was off to have dinner--after a quick detour to a chocolaterie (sp?) for a lovely decadent cup of hot chocolate. Yum!!! This is where I got Wifi for the first time all afternoon… SO there was a bit of a back up to sort through… And one of them was from Monica-- in a frantic email explaining how we'll still be friends if I say no, and all that scary lead up, and then asking if I could take or knew of someone who could take a cat of her mother's who needs a new home? Long and in some ways quite sad story… but in the long and short of it, I said yes, of course, before I even really thought about it! I have two cats, I can quite easily have one more… BUT NO MORE!! That is the line in the sand for crazy cat lady status among single women living alone… I cite Shanna here. But Missy might get a new friend out of this-- and Oz might get more alone time with me… This would be the best situation to come out of all this on my end. And if they only tolerate each other and take turns on my lap-- that wouldn't be much different than what is the case already… SO really, I can definitely take Coco. And then Monica and her mum will know that Coco is well loved and cared for… THEIR best result… Her pic will be included in this blog, of course!

After that little adventure, I went to dinner-- we met up at 6:30-- and I wasn't home until after 11!! How does this keep surprising me?! These were a couple of people I met at the conference in Lancaster, and who were all in London for a bit longer… We were from the US, South Africa, and Finland (though she is living in London now…). It was a lot of fun! And we were boisterous "ugly American tourists" at the restaurant-- as we kept cackling loudly!

It was fun--and a fun way to wrap up my London stay-- BUT it meant that I didn't get home in time to pack, then make a planned Google Hangouts date with the fam… in order to get said packed suitcase to a friend's place to keep it while I'm on the Grand Tour for the next few weeks. AND I had to talk with several people about new kitty developments… SO, last night I sent a frantic email to Mary asking if I could drop the bag off tomorrow instead. I woke up to her response saying-- sure-- so WHEW! Today's unbelievably boring plan, then, is to clean, pack, and finish up errands before my final play of the season-- Everyman with Chiwetel Ejiofor at the National… And then I leave tomorrow!

(Also, I lie-- I am getting a ticket to see Peter Pan in the Open Air theater at Regents Park that extra night I'm in London--the 19th-- before I fly back to the States… I absolutely LOVE how literary and play-ish my little area is. Eliot wrote his poems about the cats who lived in his Kensington neighborhood--now MY Kensington neighborhood! And Barrie wrote Peter Pan about Kensington Gardens-- MY Kensington Gardens! Kensington is definitely NOT my favorite part of London-- I'm not a middle-aged upper-class housewife-- BUT I love its literary history! AND I'll have seen productions of both of these works!!)

OK-- now I'm off to do errands!
